The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Luxury Destination Wedding in San Sebastián, Spain

Imagine exchanging your vows overlooking one of Europe’s most breathtaking bays, surrounded by Belle Époque architecture, world-renowned gastronomy and the unmistakable charm of Spain’s Basque coast.

For couples dreaming of a destination wedding that feels elegant, authentic and unforgettable, San Sebastián has quietly become one of Europe’s best-kept secrets.

While destinations like Tuscany, Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast continue to attract thousands of weddings every year, more and more international couples—particularly from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, are discovering something different in northern Spain: a city where luxury is understated, every meal feels like a celebration, and spectacular landscapes meet timeless sophistication.

Unlike many Mediterranean destinations, San Sebastián offers an experience that goes far beyond the wedding day. Your guests won’t simply attend a celebration; they’ll spend an entire weekend discovering Michelin-starred restaurants, hidden pintxo bars, dramatic coastlines, charming fishing villages and one of Europe’s richest culinary cultures.

Whether you’re envisioning an intimate celebration by the sea, a historic palace reception, or a luxury wedding weekend in the heart of the Basque Country, San Sebastián offers an extraordinary setting that feels both exclusive and effortlessly authentic. A destination wedding in San Sebastián is more than just a celebration, it’s an unforgettable experience for you and your guests. Having grown up here, we know every hidden gem, local tradition and little detail that transforms a beautiful wedding into an extraordinary one.

Planning a destination wedding abroad, however, can feel overwhelming. Choosing the right venue, understanding local traditions, coordinating suppliers, organising guest travel and creating a seamless wedding weekend all require local knowledge and experience.

A Seamless Arrival

Travelling internationally can feel overwhelming, but one of our priorities is making every guest feel cared for from the very beginning.

Before anyone boards their flight, we’ll have already organised every transfer, itinerary and arrival schedule.

Whether your guests land at Bilbao Airport, located approximately one hour from San Sebastián, or San Sebastián Airport (Hondarribia), just twenty minutes from the city centre, private transportation will be waiting to welcome them.

No one has to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads, renting a car or coordinating taxis after a long international flight.

Instead, they can simply relax, enjoy the scenery of the Basque coastline and let the weekend begin.

Where History Meets Timeless Elegance

Choosing the right accommodation is an essential part of creating an unforgettable guest experience.

San Sebastián offers an exceptional collection of luxury hotels, each with its own personality, history and architectural charm.

Some of our favourite recommendations include the elegant Hotel María Cristina, the peaceful Villa Soro, the iconic Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, alongside many beautiful boutique properties scattered throughout the city.

What makes these hotels so special isn’t simply their luxury—it’s their connection to San Sebastián’s remarkable history.

Fun fact: Queen María Cristina of Austria fell in love with San Sebastián in the late 19th century and chose the city as her summer residence for many years. Her decision transformed what was once a quiet coastal town into one of Europe’s most sophisticated seaside destinations, attracting aristocracy, artists and intellectuals from across the continent.

Today, you can still feel that Belle Époque elegance while strolling along La Concha promenade or enjoying a cocktail inside the legendary Hotel María Cristina.

It’s a city where history and contemporary luxury exist beautifully side by side.

Local Tip from Martina por el Norte

If we had to recommend one way to spend your first morning in San Sebastián, this would be it: walk from La Concha to Gros, grab a coffee, watch the surfers at Zurriola and let the city set the pace. It’s one of those simple experiences that captures the true essence of San Sebastián.

Discover the Basque Coast

One of the greatest advantages of getting married in San Sebastián is that some of northern Spain’s most beautiful destinations are less than an hour away.

Spend an afternoon exploring the colourful fishing village of Getaria, famous for its seafood restaurants, local txakoli wineries and breathtaking coastal views.

Visit Hondarribia, one of the most charming medieval towns in Spain, where flower-filled balconies, cobbled streets and beautifully preserved architecture create the perfect setting for a relaxed afternoon.

Or cross the French border and discover Biarritz, where elegant Belle Époque architecture meets world-class surfing, luxury boutiques and the unmistakable charm of the French Basque coast.

Three countries.

Three completely different atmospheres.

All within easy reach of your wedding weekend.

A City Made for Food Lovers

There are many reasons why couples choose San Sebastián for their destination wedding—but if you ask your guests what they’ll remember years later, chances are they’ll start by talking about the food.

In San Sebastián, every meal tells a story.

From your very first breakfast overlooking La Concha Bay to your farewell brunch by the sea, gastronomy becomes part of the celebration itself. It’s one of the few places in the world where a simple lunch can feel as memorable as a wedding reception.

Despite being a relatively small city, San Sebastián is internationally recognised as one of the world’s greatest culinary destinations. It boasts one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred restaurants per square kilometre, making it a paradise for couples who appreciate exceptional food, outstanding service and unforgettable dining experiences.

But what makes San Sebastián truly special isn’t only its Michelin stars.

It’s the balance between refined luxury and authentic Basque tradition.

One evening, your guests might enjoy an extraordinary tasting menu at one of the city’s renowned restaurants, where every dish is carefully crafted using seasonal local ingredients. The next day, they could be sharing a long wooden table in a traditional Basque sidrería, raising glasses of natural cider poured straight from enormous oak barrels while enjoying perfectly grilled txuleta steak, cod omelette, Idiazabal cheese and homemade quince jelly.

Both experiences are equally authentic.

Both are equally unforgettable.

All within easy reach of your wedding weekend.

Experience La Concha from the Water

There is perhaps no better way to appreciate the beauty of San Sebastián than from the sea.

Whether it’s a private sailing experience, a sunset boat cruise or a relaxed afternoon on the water with family and friends, seeing the city from La Concha Bay offers an entirely different perspective.

It’s peaceful.

Elegant.

And wonderfully memorable.

For many couples, this becomes one of the highlights of the entire weekend.

Taste the Flavours of the Basque Country

Food is much more than something you eat here—it’s how people connect.

Join a private cooking class with a local chef and learn the secrets behind traditional Basque recipes.

Visit the bustling La Bretxa Market, where local chefs select the freshest seafood and seasonal produce each morning.

Or spend an afternoon visiting nearby wineries in Rioja Alavesa, discovering exceptional wines while overlooking rolling vineyards and medieval villages.

These experiences allow your guests to take home far more than photographs—they leave with stories they’ll tell for years.

Slow Down and Enjoy the Moment

One thing we always tell our international couples is this:

Don’t try to see everything.

San Sebastián isn’t a destination to rush through.

It’s a city to savour.

Take time to linger over long lunches.

Watch the sunset from Monte Igueldo.

Order one more pintxo.

Walk a little further along the promenade.

Sit by the sea without looking at the time.

Sometimes, the most luxurious experience isn’t found in a five-star hotel or a Michelin-starred restaurant.

It’s simply having the time to enjoy a place exactly as the locals do.

And that’s what makes San Sebastián so unforgettable.

Local Tip from Martina por el Norte

If you have an extra day before or after your wedding, don’t spend it ticking off tourist attractions. Rent a car, drive along the Basque coastline without a fixed plan, stop in Getaria for lunch, continue to Zumaia to admire the spectacular Flysch cliffs and finish the day watching the sunset in Zarautz with an ice cream in hand. It’s one of our favourite ways to experience the Basque Country—and one we often recommend to our couples.

Experience San Sebastián Like a Local

Start the Day Like a Local

Forget rushing from one attraction to another.

One of the best ways to experience San Sebastián is simply to slow down and embrace its rhythm.

Start your morning with a walk along the iconic La Concha Beach, following the promenade all the way to Zurriola Beach in the vibrant neighbourhood of Gros. Along the way, you’ll discover why locals consider this one of the most beautiful walks in the city.

Once you arrive in Gros, stop for a specialty coffee and a freshly baked pastry before watching surfers catch the first waves of the day.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not join them?

Whether you’ve never stepped on a surfboard before or you’re already experienced, the Basque coast is one of Europe’s most celebrated surfing destinations. We’d be delighted to recommend our favourite local surf schools and organise a private lesson for you and your guests.

It’s the perfect way to experience a different side of San Sebastián—active, relaxed and deeply connected to the Atlantic Ocean.

Afterwards, stroll back through the city at your own pace, stopping for a little shopping, a glass of txakoli or simply taking in the atmosphere before the wedding celebrations continue.

Did you know?

Queen María Cristina spent almost every summer here.

Thursday Evening: A True Basque Welcome

Rather than hosting a traditional rehearsal dinner, we love introducing our couples’ guests to the authentic spirit of San Sebastián from the very first evening.

Imagine wandering through the narrow streets of the Old Town as the city comes alive.

Instead of sitting at one restaurant all night, guests move from one traditional bar to another, enjoying an authentic pintxo crawl—one of the Basque Country’s most beloved traditions.

A glass of crisp txakoli.

Freshly grilled seafood.

The famous Gilda.

Slow-cooked beef cheeks.

Creamy Basque cheesecake.

Each stop tells a different story, introducing your guests not only to extraordinary food but also to the warm, sociable culture that makes San Sebastián so unique.

By the end of the evening, conversations flow naturally, new friendships have formed, and everyone already feels part of something special.

Long before your ceremony begins, your guests are already creating memories they’ll talk about for years.

Start the Day Like a Local

Forget rushing from one attraction to another.

Mornings in San Sebastián are meant to be slow.

We always encourage our couples to begin the day with a walk along La Concha Beach, when the city is still waking up and the promenade belongs almost entirely to locals enjoying their morning stroll or jog.

Stop for coffee and a freshly baked pastry at one of the city’s charming cafés before wandering through the streets without a plan.

Sometimes, those unplanned moments become the most memorable part of the trip.

Our Favourite Local Recommendations

If you’re visiting for a wedding weekend, these are a few experiences we never stop recommending:

  • Watch the sunset from Monte Igueldo for one of the most breathtaking views over La Concha Bay.
  • Take a pintxo tour through the Old Town, stopping at several traditional bars instead of dining in just one restaurant.
  • Visit Getaria for freshly grilled seafood, local txakoli and spectacular coastal scenery.
  • Explore the charming streets of Hondarribia, one of the most beautiful towns in the Basque Country.
  • Spend a day in Biarritz, where French elegance meets Atlantic surf culture.
  • Enjoy a private wine tasting in Rioja Alavesa, one of Spain’s most celebrated wine regions.
  • Sail across La Concha Bay for a unique perspective of the city’s coastline.
  • Take home a piece of Basque culture, whether it’s artisan ceramics, gourmet products or memories made around a shared table.

The Best Time to Get Married in San Sebastián

One of the questions we’re asked most often by international couples is:

When is the best time to get married in San Sebastián?

The truth is that every season has its own charm, but if you asked us to choose, our favourite months are May, June and July.

Having grown up in San Sebastián and organised weddings here year after year, we’ve found that late spring and early summer offer the most enjoyable balance of mild temperatures, longer daylight hours and the vibrant atmosphere that makes the city so special.

The gardens are in full bloom, the terraces come alive, the beaches begin to fill with locals and the entire city seems to spend more time outdoors.

It’s the perfect setting for welcome dinners overlooking the sea, sunset cocktail hours and celebrations that continue late into warm summer evenings.

Another advantage is the extended daylight. During these months, the sun sets late, allowing plenty of time for outdoor ceremonies, relaxed cocktail receptions and breathtaking golden-hour photography along the coastline.

May

May is one of our favourite months.

The city feels fresh and peaceful after winter, temperatures are comfortable, and San Sebastián hasn’t yet reached its busiest tourist season.

It’s ideal for couples looking for a sophisticated celebration with a relaxed atmosphere.

June

June offers everything couples dream of.

Long sunny days, lively terraces, beautiful gardens and a wonderful energy throughout the city.

For many of our international weddings, it’s the perfect combination of excellent weather and an authentic local atmosphere.

July

Early July brings a true summer feeling while still maintaining much of the city’s elegance and charm.

The beaches are alive, restaurants buzz with activity and the Basque coastline looks spectacular.

It’s a wonderful time for couples who want to combine a luxury wedding with an unforgettable holiday for their guests.

What About the Weather?

One of the things we love most about San Sebastián is its lush green landscape, and that’s partly thanks to the Atlantic climate.

Like anywhere in northern Spain, the weather can never be guaranteed, and that’s something we always discuss openly with our couples.

The good news is that the city’s most beautiful venues are perfectly prepared for every scenario, ensuring your wedding is just as magical whether the sun is shining or a few Atlantic clouds decide to make an appearance.

As locals, we also know how quickly conditions can change here. It’s not unusual to wake up to soft morning rain and enjoy sunshine by the afternoon.

That’s why, rather than chasing perfect weather, we encourage our couples to embrace everything that makes San Sebastián unique.

After all, some of the most beautiful wedding photographs we’ve ever seen have been taken beneath dramatic Basque skies.

Our Local Recommendation 😉

If you’re planning a destination wedding in San Sebastián, we’d recommend choosing a date between mid-May and early July. In our experience, these months offer the best combination of pleasant temperatures, long daylight hours and the vibrant atmosphere that makes the city truly unforgettable.
